Your partner's been mentioning it more lately.
You're short-tempered. You're not sleeping well. You snap over small things. And no matter what you do, you can't seem to lose that weight around your midsection.
You tell yourself it's fine. You're just busy. This is what work looks like. Everyone deals with stress.
But here's what most men don't realize: chronic stress isn't just making you irritable. it's quietly wrecking your body from the inside out.

What stress actually does to your body

When you're stressed, your body releases cortisol. That's normal. Cortisol is supposed to help you handle short-term threats.
The problem is when stress never stops. When work pressure, money worries, or family tension just keep coming. Your body stays in emergency mode, pumping out cortisol constantly.
And that creates a cascade of problems:
Your testosterone drops. High cortisol suppresses testosterone production. That means lower energy, decreased muscle mass, reduced sex drive, and more fat storage—especially around your belly.
Your heart takes a hit. Chronic stress increases inflammation, raises blood pressure, and makes your blood vessels less flexible. Translation: higher risk of heart disease and stroke.
Your gut stops working right. Stress slows digestion, increases inflammation in your intestines, and can trigger issues like acid reflux, bloating, and irregular bowel movements.
Your sleep gets worse. Elevated cortisol at night keeps you wired when you should be winding down. You lie awake, or wake up at 3 AM with your mind racing.
This isn't about being weak. This is basic biology. Your body wasn't designed to run on high alert 24/7.

Why "toughing it out" backfires

A lot of men were raised to believe that dealing with stress means ignoring it. Push through. Don't complain. Keep working.
The problem? Ignoring stress doesn't make it go away. It just makes the damage quieter.
You might not feel terrible day-to-day. But six months later, you're 15 pounds heavier, exhausted all the time, and wondering why your sex drive disappeared.
Your body's been screaming at you the whole time. You just weren't listening.
